We’re on the lookout for a Senior Backend Engineer (€50k - 60k / year) to join our team and help build high-performance backend systems powering global sports entertainment experiences. This is a full-time role open to remote candidates (with occasional travel to the office) and is a great opportunity to work on large-scale distributed systems used by millions of customers worldwide.

 

As a Senior Backend Engineer, you’ll join an agile development team and be responsible for building robust, scalable services using Java and other modern technologies. You’ll collaborate with engineers across the business to deliver innovative solutions that meet both technical and customer needs.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and deploy efficient, testable, and scalable backend services and APIs using Java.

• Execute the full software development lifecycle including design, documentation, development, testing, and deployment.

• Contribute to system architecture and infrastructure decisions, bringing expertise in distributed systems and microservices.

• Write and maintain unit, component, and integration tests in collaboration with QA engineers.

• Develop technical documentation, flowcharts, and diagrams to support the development and product process.

• Collaborate in peer programming, mentoring junior developers, and sharing best practices.

• Participate in on-call rotations to support platform stability and performance.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience as a backend developer, primarily using Java.

• Solid understanding of SOAP and REST client-server protocols.

• Hands-on experience with distributed systems and microservices architecture.

• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and modern development workflows.

• Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.

• Comfortable working in agile, fast-paced teams and independently driving initiatives.

• Ability to clearly communicate technical concepts with both engineers and stakeholders.

• Legally based in Portugal (Portuguese fluency not required); strong English communication skills.

 

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with tools and technologies such as Scala, Kafka, Akka, RabbitMQ, Apache Storm, Cassandra, Zookeeper, Memcached.

• Exposure to DevOps practices and cloud infrastructure (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).

• Previous experience mentoring or leading development teams.
